Intern Massage

The Internship Clinic at Massage Therapy Education Center gives members of the community an opportunity to receive affordable massage therapy while helping our students develop the experience and confidence necessary for professional practice.

Intern massage sessions are provided by massage therapy students who have progressed to the clinical portion of their training and are completing supervised internship hours as part of their professional massage therapy education.

What Is an Intern Massage?

An intern massage is a hands-on massage session performed by a massage therapy student rather than a licensed massage therapist.

Before working with clients in our Internship Clinic, students complete foundational coursework and hands-on technique training designed to prepare them for supervised clinical practice.

During internship, students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned with real clients while developing important professional skills such as client communication, session planning, proper draping, body mechanics, technique selection, time management, and adapting a massage session to the individual client.

What to Expect

Your visit will be similar in many ways to a professional massage appointment.

Before your session, your student therapist will review your intake information and discuss your goals, areas of concern, pressure preferences, and any conditions that may affect your massage.

Depending upon the student’s level of training and your individual needs, your session may incorporate techniques learned within the MTEC curriculum.

Because this is an educational clinic, your student therapist may occasionally consult with an instructor before or during the session. Instructors are available to provide guidance and supervision when needed.

Your comfort, privacy, and safety remain priorities throughout your visit.

Internship is where classroom education begins to become professional experience.

Working with members of the public exposes students to different body types, client needs, communication styles, and musculoskeletal presentations that cannot be fully replicated in the classroom.

Intern Massage vs. Licensed Massage Therapy

Intern massage is an educational service and should not be confused with treatment provided by one of our licensed massage therapists.

Clients seeking advanced clinical work, specialized lymphatic services, treatment of complex conditions, or a specific experienced practitioner may be better served by scheduling with a licensed therapist through our professional clinic.
